Happy List

So I'm back at work after 10 days at home in Scotland. And it sucks. Really, really sucks.

But I'm not going to dwell. I'm going to make a list of things to look forward to in the coming months.

~ Going home again in three weeks for the event of the year - EUROVISION;
~ Take That concert;
~ Two, count them, TWO bank holidays this month;
~ Amanda's party;
~ Going to see Avenue Q;
~ Going on a pub crawl with my old colleagues in Winchester;
~ My sister's family coming down for a visit;
~ Starting my driving lessons next week;
~ Hopefully going to see Idina Menzel in Wicked later in the year (I was so excited when she was annnounced to be joining the West End cast!);
~ Hopefully, hopefully, hopefully moving back to Scotland within the next year.

EUROVISION!!!!

Right there with you on the excitement factor!

Leone - Eurovision is in a nutshell, a big singing contest. There are something like 20 odd countris that take part (all European I think), and each one submits an entry - solo singer, couple or a band.

They all sing a song, and then we vote on them - each country conducts its own vote. The Eurovision hosts then go round each country and ask them to announce who were their top 12 acts. The 12th placed is announced first, working through to the favourite act. 12th place earns you 1 point, and 1st place earns you 12 points.

After each country has announced their poll results, the leader board updates.

It's funny because we have Terry Wogan, an Irish radio presenter who's been commentating on Eurovision for donkey's years now, and he is so funny. Very astute and spot on with his observations, and he is the reason most of us watch it, because he makes us laugh. His observations about the geopolitics are very accurate too - for example "Ooh, look - Turkey gave Greece 12 points. Never saw that one coming. Oh, and Sweden gives 12 points to Norway. Another display of neighbour voting there..."

Only he's way, way better than my attempt at channelling him [wink]

(oh and the winning country then hosts the next year's Eurovision. The bottom 2 countries I think get relegated out of the competition? Eileen, do you know more about that, and how they get back in? I forget about that bit).

The top 10 countries from 2005 contest will automatically go in. The four countries that contribute most to the European Broadcasting Union have a guaranteed spot, no matter where they place the previous year (which is why they can't kick us out even though we placed 22nd out of 24 last year! Mwahahahahaha!). Finally the top ten entries from the 2006 semi-final go through. That's right. There's rounds and a semi-final! Eurovision is a huge deal!

Also, you must understand that the voting is totally political and it all depends who your friends are. Our entry last year, while not great, wasn't bad. No way bad enough to come 22nd. The reason for it is that Europe are still pissed at us for the war in Iraq!

Terry Wogan is GOD!

It has the best drinking game EVER!

I can't wait!
